Girl, 5, Tanzania

“My aunt is helping my family because my mom is sick. She makes dough and tea and sells it in a stand in our neighbourhood. She lives with us too and sometimes I help her with cleaning and cooking.”

This story and drawing was shared with me when I asked this child what she liked best about school. Although she appeared to enjoy her time at school in an urban setting in Tanzania, she was completely focused on her home life which was filled with challenges and concerns. Her mother had contracted HIV/AIDS and was very ill.
