Protection:It’s a Rainbow Bed

Girl, 4 years, United States

“It’s a rainbow bed under those covers.  This is so I don’t fall out. The little things are when there is an emergency. You can push the buttons.  You go the door; you’ll press more buttons and the door would open.”

Preschool children often create representations and drawings that reflect their need for security.  This child’s drawing showcased her desire to feel safe in her rainbow bed.  A child’s bed is their own personal space – their own sanctuary – where they can be themselves, release emotions, and conquer fears.  This child’s drawing also depicted her desire to be prepared for any unseen emergency that may happen. I believe this notion gave the child a strong sense of empowerment – she had a plan & knew what to do when she felt unsafe.
