Who Holds Tomorrow

The hands that will shape tomorrow are in this room today

They will grow and inherit the earth

Their work will carry us into the future.

Today they play with clay so tomorrow they may add art to the world

They build with blocks and imagine homes in safe neighborhoods

They count their friends, teachers, counting sticks

And every time someone smiles at them,

So tomorrow they will be loving and responsible adults.

Today they sing with joy and draw our attention to the inherent possibilities of youth

They come through these doors sensitive to the good and the hurtful of life.

They help each other regardless of ability

So tomorrow they will hear those in need of help and celebrate their freedom to respond.

Today they hold the hands of their parents, trusted friends,

And some whose hands feel older and not so hurried.

Hold them with respect and care.

These children will be tomorrow’s peacemakers and builders,

Healers and dreamers.

They represent the memories and desires of each of us

They are the reason we work to make the world a better place.

Take time

Sing with them and build with their blocks.

No action goes unnoticed by these observant eyes

We are the models for their visions.

Gathered in this room are the sounds of the future

You can hear the voices of tomorrow.

Their dreams will become our reality

Listen carefully, the sounds of tomorrow begin today.
